Atlas Carbon Storage Hub
In 2022, Shell and ATCO EnPower reached an agreement to partner on the development of the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub.
The Atlas Carbon Storage Hub is an open access hub intended to store CO2 emissions generated in the Alberta Industrial Heartland region and surrounding area.
Project development
Atlas is being developed in multiple phases:
Phase one
The first phase, which achieved a Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2024, plans to permanently store CO2 captured by Shell’s Polaris carbon capture project. Polaris is designed to capture approximately 650,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from the Shell Scotford Refinery and Chemicals Plant near Fort Saskatchewan.
Future phases
Atlas has completed its initial appraisal program to facilitate development for a future growth phase of the project, which is subject to a future FID.
Partners
The Government of Alberta selected Atlas as one of the hubs to enable sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Alberta’s industrial heartland region and surrounding area. Atlas entered into an evaluation agreement with the province to further explore the project area’s suitability for safely storing CO2 emissions.
Atlas, as an open-access hub, is open to third parties interested in sequestering their CO2 emissions.
